Metaphor comprehension : What makes a metaphor difficult to understand ?
نویسنده
چکیده
Comprehension difficulty was rated for metaphors of the form Noun1-is-aNoun2; in addition, participants completed frames of the form Noun1-is-________ with their literal interpretation of the metaphor. Metaphor comprehension was simulated with a computational model based on Latent Semantic Analysis. The model matched participants’ interpretations for both easy and difficult metaphors. When interpreting easy metaphors, both the participants and the model generated highly consistent responses. When interpreting difficult metaphors, both the participants and the model generated disparate responses.

Theoretical accounts of metaphor processing appeal to dimensions like conventionality and aptness to explain variability in metaphor comprehensibility. In a typical experiment, one group of naive participants rates a set of metaphoric sentences along these dimensions, while another is timed reading the same sentences. Then, the ratings...
متن کاملMetaphor Understanding { a Cognitive Science Perspective
This paper surveys some of the important trends of the research on metaphor comprehension in the cognitive science area. We examine the semantic theories of the metaphor, some pros and (mostly) cons of the very challenged error-recovery model of metaphor comprehension. We present Lakoo's view that metaphors are conceptual rather than linguistic phenomena; we discuss how theories of other tropes...
متن کاملIndividuals' process of metaphor interpretations and interestingness cognition
In this paper, we investigated the process of interestingness cognition in metaphor comprehension. We did this from the point of view that the interestingness of a metaphor (e.g., “life is like a gamble”) is related to its interpretative diversity. Two studies were conducted to assess this phenomenon: Study 1 (interpretation-production) and Study 2 (interpretationpresentation study). In Study 1...
